The Hanamaulu ditch system was constructed by workers for Lihue Sugar Plantation irrigation. This series of canals and tunnels was intended to provide irrigation for the big sugar cane areas in and around Lihue from the waterfalls and streams of Mt. Waialeale. Although the Lihue Sugar Plant has since been closed, these incredible waterways are still alive and have a new life.
